Other than the Brooks Range in Alaska, the Uinta Mountains are the most prominent east/west range in the United States. Backpacking and hiking presents incredible views. Glaciers have created large alpine basins filled with hundreds of lakes and surrounded by magnificent peaks that reach up to 13,528 at Kings Peak-the highest point in Utah. As for wildlife, moose and elk are commonly seen, however more elusive mammals such as black bear, bobcat, and fox live there as well. Wyoming Fishing and Ice Fishing. From blue ribbon trout streams to world class reservoir fisheries, Wyoming offers ample opportunities to anglers of all persuasions. The Upper Green River Valley offers first-rate fishing opportunities year-round and winter is no exception. Area lakes typically freeze around late December and stay frozen until about mid-March. The coldest month generally is January, bringing several weeks of sub-zero weather to put a good layer of ice on. Closest lakes for ice fishing near Pinedale are Fremont and Half Moon Lakes. Each winter, usually in early March, the Pinedale Boat Club sponsors the Big Fish Ice Fishing Derby on Fremont Lake.
